MISSION TO ZYXX

Podcast | 2017-2023

sound-designer, co-creator, producer

MISSION TO ZYXX is an improvised, obsessively sound designed science fiction podcast following a team of ambassadors as they attempt to establish diplomatic relations with planets in the remote and chaotic ZYXX QUADRANT of the TREMILLION SECTOR.

The show premiered in 2017, and the 5th and final season ended in September 2022. It was the most creative and wonderful experience I've had making a thing. I got to use every skill I have, and develop a ton more.

By season 5 the show was bigger and more ambitious than anything we could've imagined back in 2017. An orchestral score, intricately edited, deep character development, and mixed in a super-immersive binaural ambisonics format.

Beyond the sound design, I pitched characters and plots, help book guests, design merchandise, perform live, occasionally play walk on characters, and make a ton of music which included mixing a real orchestra, producing a full-length album for one of the characters of the show, and writing and performing bro-country anthems for my in world character, Jordan B'Korkan.

I made the show alongside six other co-creators: Jeremy Bent, Alden Ford, Allie Kokesh, Seth Lind, Winston Noel and Moujan Zolfaghari. Each episode features a special guest comedian playing a character with the unlucky fate of receiving the ambassador team on their home planet. The original score by Brendan Ryan is performed by a live 60 piece orchestra. Our vinyl soundtrack album was released in 2023.

Gorgeous is a short film by writer/director Morgan Gould.

Synopsis:

Beth is getting married in 36 hours and her mother hasn't seen her dress. If this sounds low stakes, you aren't a fat woman with a mother who hates herself. Grab a piece of Danish and dig into this comedic tragedy about mothers, daughters, and who gets to be a bride.

The film premiered in 2024 at the Santa Barbara Film Festival. Official selection Brooklyn Film Festival. Official Selection Woods Hole Film Festival.

ZIWE SEASON 2

Songs | 2022

mix, master, additional production

ziwe logo.jpeg

Ziwe is a New York City based late-night talkshow on Showtime hosted by comedian Ziwe Fumudoh.

For season 2, I was brought on board by music director and Ziwe collaborator, Jen Goma, to mix, master, and collaborate on several of the genre parody music videos featured in the show.

The project was very fun to work on. I loved the challenge of working in many different genres and going for a major label pop sound. Four of the songs I worked on are featured in the show the show including "Am I Gay?" "Baby Let's Just Move On" and "Hot Hot Ozone Hot."

I've since worked on another batch of songs with Jen and Ziwe for an upcoming musical release.

GIDEON'S PROMISE

PSA | 2022

dialog editing, mix, master

Gideons Promise square2.jpg

I was proud to work on this PSA for Gideon's Promise, an organization I admire.

I was brought on board to do a fair amount of cleanup to the dialog, as well as the mix and master. There had been a mishap on set that cause some of the lavaliere audio to be unusable which meant that a few setups only had boom-microphone audio available. Because they shot in gigantic bricked-walled rooms, some of the dialog sounded incredibly boomy with a lot of reverb.

De-reverbing and de-noising can be pretty tricky. It's very easy to overdo it and end up with audio that sounds unnatural and garbled. I used a variety of methods and tools, including iZotope RX10, to clean up the problematic audio, and treated the overall mix in such a way that (hopefully) the listener would be unable to identify which interviews had poor audio.

BLSSOM

Album Tracks | 2021

engineer, vocal production

Blssom.jpeg

BLSSOM is a Latin-Pop duo based in New York City. In early 2020 they came to The Overlook with producer Didi Gutman (Brazilian Girls) for overdubs and vocal tracking for two singles, "Veneno" and "Vas."

Over 3 days we recorded drums, bass, guitars, and lead vocals. I served as the engineer and Pro Tools operator. Because I speak a little, and understand a lot of Spanish, we were able to run the session almost completely in Spanish which kept everything moving.

WINN-DIXIE

Ad Spots | 2020-2024

sound design and mix

FSFCZvgXwAEzFRu.jpeg

I worked on several TV and radio spots for the grocery store chain, Winn-Dixie.

I first came on board in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Several ADR and VO recording sessions were required to complete the ad campaign that was disrupted by the shutdown. I put together remote recording kits and trained the actors to engineer themselves over Zoom recording sessions.

I went on to record, sound design, and mix many more TV and radio spots over the next several years.

WET

Album, Single | 2017-2019

engineer, additional production, guitar

Wet_-_Still_Run.jpeg

In the summer of 2017 I worked with the Brooklyn indie-pop band Wet during their recording sessions with producer Loren Humphrey, in Bushwick Brooklyn. The songs from those sessions went on to appear on the band's second album, Still Run released by Columbia Records.

I primarily served as recording engineer, working closely with the band to get a more textured and live feel. On a few occasions I contributed guitar and bass parts as well.

Towards the end of those sessions, I co-produced, co-wrote, and played guitar on a song based on one of singer Kelly Zutrau's old demos that wasn't meant to make it on to the record. That song, "Old Bone" was later released as a single in 2019.

EZTV

Band | 2014-2019

bass, co-producer, mix, engineer

eztv-calling-out-800x800.jpeg

There used to be a joke that EZTV was your favorite indie-band's favorite indie-band. Ezra Tenenbaum, Michael Stasiak, and I first played together when circumstances conspired to put us in a small rehearsal space, auditioning to be the North American backing band for J. Spaceman's Spiritualized. We didn't get that gig, but we did really enjoy playing together, so we formed EZTV. We signed to Captured Tracks shortly after our first show, went on to make 2 records and a handful of singles, and got to tour and collaborate with some of our all-time favorite artists.

“High In Place further cements this band’s mastery of songwriting and mood, flexing an affinity for Byrds-style jangle, air-light Feelies new wave, and the studio-pop perfection of Jeff Lynne. Musically EZTV are close cousins with Real Estate, whose Martin Courtney and Matt Kallman are part of a star-studded High In Place guest list that also includes Jenny Lewis, Chris Cohen, Quilt’s John Andrews, Nic Hessler, and Mega Bog.”

BEN HARPER - "ID"

Song | 2018

engineer

ben harper studio square.jpg

I served as the audio engineer for the song "ID" written by Ben Harper and his daughter, and produced by Jesse Lauter  for the Netflix Documentary, The Rachel Divide.

Over the three days in the studio we tracked, mixed and mastered the song, start to finish. The song features a string quartet, backup vocals by Jaya Harper, and visually everything else player by Ben.

FRIENDS WHO FOLK

New Yorker Video | 2016

engineer, mix, cameo

friends.jpeg

I engineered the recording session for a New Yorker video featuring the comedy-folk duo Friends Who Folk. I make a cameo as a bored studio guy.

I didn't know her at the time, but one of the members of Friends Who Folk went on to be a 3-time guest on Mission to Zyxx.
